Seven accused individuals of German far-left organization face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
