The star has given the complete sum of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to preserve the UK's independent live music spots.

The star was given the prize on October 16 as his third album People Watching was chosen as the top album of the past year.

The musician has opted to donate the funds to the MVT, in recognition of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"I personally would not have achieved this success if it weren't for all the performances I did around the region, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," remarked Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – about 16% of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, major artists like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

He also joined in, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to help thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

The money helped locations that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues caused by floods, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and noise complaints.

Additional spaces were granted monetary aid in modernizing infrastructure and technical equipment that helped musicians and concertgoers.

"The notion that revenue from shows in large arenas supports the smaller venues, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," Fender has said.

The musician is not the first artist to donate his honor prize money to worthy causes.

When the band received the award in the mid-90s for their album Different Class, frontman the singer stated that the group would donate their cash to the organization the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist split her award between several good causes, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," she explained to outlets.

Previously, Ezra Collective gave their winnings to the youth organization that supported their group, alongside other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients the group gave their award to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was sufficient," remarked artist Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't need the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning affected the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved two small stages in south-east England, by bringing them into public stewardship.

One venue in that area and the other in the city were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is supported by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "ownership units" in the venues.
